সাকিলা ফারজানা: ‘মুসলমানরা ইসলামিক ব্যাংকিং সিস্টেমের ক্ষেত্রে সকলে একমত’
In a powerful speech to parliament on 10 June 2026, Shakila Farzana, widely known as ‘Barrister Shakila Farzana’, addressed the urgent need for a comprehensive legal framework for Islamic banking in Bangladesh. Highlighting that 90% of the population are Muslims who consider interest (riba) strictly haram, she explains why the current system (which relies on central bank circulars and guidelines) is not fully Islamic.
She calls upon the Religious Affairs Minister to establish an Islamic banking system by involving Islamic scholars and experienced lawyers to build an interest free financial model.
Salahuddin Ahmed, who is not Bangladesh’s Minister of Religious Affairs but the Minister of Home Affairs, responds to her question. With the Religious Affairs Minister, Kazi Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, temporarily absent, Ahmed has been tasked with overseeing the ministry on an interim basis.
