Spain, Ireland and Norway recognise Palestinian statehood

Spain, Ireland, and Norway have formally recognised Palestinian statehood—a move that marks a significant shift in their foreign policies amid the enduring Middle East conflict. The decision affirms Palestine’s aspiration for independent status, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

This diplomatic step is designed to support a two-state solution by reinforcing relations with the Palestinian Authority and encouraging renewed negotiations between Israel and Palestine. Proponents argue that the recognition reflects a steadfast commitment to peace and a balanced resolution of long-standing conflicts, while critics—particularly from Israel—consider it a provocative move.
